Background and Biography

Dr Charlotte R. Stoner, Lecturer in Psychology, University of Greenwich, UK.

I am a psychology lecturer with interests in psychometric theory, positive psychology and dementia. Whilst my work is primarily UK based, I have also been a part of research on dementia in low and middle-income countries. I have worked with people with dementia since completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Kent in 2012, first clinically as a support worker and now as a research active lecturer.

As part of my University College London (UCL) Grand Challenges PhD project supervised by Prof Aimee Spector (UCL) and Prof Martin Orrell (University of Nottingham), I developed and evaluated two outcome measures designed to capture important aspects of well-being for people with dementia. These were the Engagement and Independence in Dementia Questionnaire (EID-Q) and the Positive Psychology Outcome Measure (PPOM). The PPOM measures hope and resilience, whilst the EID-Q measures subjective independence and social engagement. It is believed that these were the first positive psychology outcome measures in the world to be specifically developed for people with dementia.

The concepts in both the PPOM and EID-Q were selected for investigation by people with dementia, carers, healthcare professionals and experts in the field. These groups were also continually consulted as the measures were developed. I also conducted a psychometric validation of a third measure: The Control, Autonomy, Self-Realisation and Pleasure Scale (CASP-19) for older adults with dementia.

In a large scale study in the UK, the PPOM, EID-Q and CASP-19  were highly related to both quality of life and to symptoms of depression. Both the PPOM and EID-Q are currently being used in further large scale intervention research for people with dementia, including a five year research programme called Promoting Independence in Dementia (PRIDE), led by the University of Nottingham. There are also a series of translations and cross-cultural adaptions ongoing, including Dutch and Mandarin.

Further measure development studies are currently being planned and it is hoped this work will commence in late 2020. You can follow updates on this work via Twitter or ResearchGate.
